Historic Caboose relocated to Downtown Salida
Historic 0576 caboose was relocated to the cul-de-sac at the north end of “F” Street in downtown Salida.
The move of the caboose to the railroad yards was a homecoming in a sense because that is where it started out in 1886.
According to railroad buff Jim Miller, Salida, this caboose and its sister caboose, now in Gunnison, were built in the shops in the Salida roundhouse, which has long since been removed from the former railroad yards.
“Most train cars, including cabooses, were built by factories,” Miller said. “Pullman is a good example. But this one was built in a local shop, so it’s appropriate that it is now back where it started, and it’s great that it’s being restored.”
The caboose is one of many attractions in historic downtown Salida.
