ARLINGTON, Va.—October 26, 2015—The National Science Teachers Association, in partnership with Lockheed Martin, today announced that five out of the 30 science teachers chosen as Lockheed Martin-NSTA Fellows in the 2015-2016 NSTA New Science Teacher Academy are from Colorado. Selected from hundreds of applications nationwide, the Fellows will participate in a host of science-related activities and professional learning opportunities.

Lockheed Martin-NSTA Fellows:

• Lindsay Chou, Fox Ridge Middle School, Aurora, Colo.
• Victoria Filbrandt, Martin Luther King Jr. Early College, Denver, Colo.
• Kate Madden, Salida Middle School, Salida, Colo.
• Brooke Ravanelli, Denver School of Science and Technology: Green Valley Ranch High School, Denver, Colo.
• Marley Pillion, North High School, Denver, Colo.

“We are thrilled to provide these teachers with the resources and support needed to help them feel confident and passionate about the important work they do in motivating today’s youth to become tomorrow’s leading STEM professionals,” said NSTA Executive Director Dr. David Evans.

The Lockheed Martin-NSTA Fellows were selected on the basis of criteria, including showing evidence of a solid science background and displaying a strong interest in growing as a professional science educator. During their fellowship, recipients will receive:

• A discipline-specific mentor;
• Access to a facilitated web-based curriculum devoted to content and classroom pedagogy;
• An opportunity to participate in a variety of web-based professional learning activities, including a specially designated online learning community;
• Financial support to attend the NSTA 2016 National Conference on Science Education in Nashville; and
• A comprehensive member package.

Launched during the spring of 2007, the NSTA New Science Teacher Academy was designed to help promote quality science teaching, enhance teacher confidence and classroom excellence, and improve teacher content knowledge. Since its inception, the Academy has provided high-quality professional learning opportunities to more than 1,000 science teachers nationwide.
